How long is it safe to store leftover pie slices?” This is a question we get asked all the time.  The answer depends on your choice of pie and whether you store it on the counter or in the fridge.

An unrefrigerated apple pie is generally safe to eat for about two days if stored in a cool, dry place. If it might last past a day or two, it is best to store your pie in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life. If refrigerated, an apple pie can can be safely stored for up to four to five days.

Pie storage varies significantly by type due to ingredients and moisture content. Cream and custard-based pies (like pumpkin, banana cream, chocolate cream) have the shortest refrigerator life of 3-4 days due to high dairy content and risk of bacterial growth. Fruit pies with sugar and acid (apple, cherry, berry) can last 4-5 days refrigerated. Meringue pies have a shorter 2-3 day window because egg whites are highly perishable. Nut pies like pecan typically last 4-5 days. Always store in an airtight container and refrigerate to maximize freshness and safety.

Stay Fresh Pie Cutters can help you to protect your pies from premature spoilage. By preventing wasted slices, the The Stay Fresh Pie Cutter can pay for itself in just a few pies.

Sharing a pie with friends and family is an honored tradition across America. We want our loved ones to enjoy the freshest and most healthful pie possible. With the Stay Fresh Pie Cutter you know each piece will be as fresh and delicious looking as the first slice. Each piece is perfectly proportioned and never runny or crumbly.

Always use your best judgment and check for any signs of spoilage such as mold, off smells, or changes in texture before consuming the pie.

If you can’t eat the whole pie within two-four days, you can freeze it for up to three months (2 for Cream pies). Before freezing, wrap your pie tightly in two layers of plastic wrap and one layer of aluminum foil. Place in an airtight container, like a large zip-top bag. Meringue pies are not recommended for freezing (texture breaks down).
